No matter what your living situation, we all need a relaxing place to call our own at the end of the day. Whether it’s to escape roommates, kids, or just the daily hassles of work and life, your master bedroom should be a sanctuary where you can de-stress and decompress. If your bedroom feels more “cluttered mess” than “blissful escape,” here are some simple steps that anyone can take to get closer to having their own private oasis in their very own home.
Soothing Colours
Everyone has their own colour preferences, but there are certain colours that naturally lend themselves to relaxing while other colours are more stimulating and suited to environments where you don’t spend most of your time sleeping. Greens, blues, and neutrals are all fantastic choices for clearing your mind, breathing deeply, and slowing down your heart rate. Reds and yellows are more stimulating and perhaps better suited to your kitchen or somewhere else where high-energy stimulation is more welcome.
Get Rid of the Clutter
All too often bedrooms can turn into storage space. While it may be tempting to throw all of the dirty laundry, unfinished piles of work, laptops, phone chargers, and everything else you don’t want your friends and family looking at when you’re hosting company into the bedroom, this robs you of the sanctuary you need in today’s high-stress environment.
Instead of cluttering up your bedroom’s living space, make better use of your existing closets by getting creative. Designate special bins or cubbies for work, electronics, or anything else that can remind you of your daily stresses.
Making Mornings Easier
Hiding away clutter is one way to make your bedroom less stressful, but simply tucking it away without organizing it is only going to make life stressful again when you can’t find the clothes you want to wear or the cell phone charger that you need in the morning.
Organize your belongings by, again, making full use of the closet that you have. If you think you have too many clothes to organize effectively, stop to think:
Do you only have one rod in your closet? Perhaps you could save space by adding another underneath for shorter articles of clothing like shirts and skirts.
Be sure to hang overhead shelves to keep personal belongings that you don’t use regularly. They won’t be taking up space where you want to keep more frequently used belongings at arm’s reach, but you’ll know where they are when you need to find them.
What Colour Should You Paint Your Closet?
Closets are one of the most underrated features of the average home, and it’s easy to overlook them when it comes to interior design, which we think is a big shame. After all, you use your closet everyday, and we bet that you’d be very surprised if you were to add up the amount of time you spend staring into it as you decide what to wear for the day.
So with that, why not give it the same attention as the rest of your home and take your closet up a notch by giving it that “personal touch?” One of the most simple and affordable ways to do this is with a coat of paint. The only hard part is deciding what colour of paint you want to use!
Fortunately, we’re here with a handy list of things to consider that will hopefully make your decision easy.
Neutrals
Sticking to neutrals when painting your closet is the safest bet for a few reasons. Firstly, neutrals are likely to be much more timeless meaning that you won’t have to worry about repainting over that “tangerine orange” that was so popular last season when you go to sell your house ten years from now.
Also, remember that the clothes and contents that you’re going to store in the closet are likely to be a variety of different colours. Displaying them on a neutral backdrop will make the things inside your closet more visually appealing, and easier to see.
Colours That Pop
On the other hand, if you want to be a bit more daring, a small space like a closet can be a great way to experiment with louder colours without having to commit to painting your entire room “passion pink” or “electric lemon.”
Light and bright
In general, whether you opt for a neutral or a colour with some fun flare, we recommend sticking to shades on the lighter and brighter end of the spectrum. This is especially true for smaller closets, since light colours give the illusion of larger spaces. As well, if you’re closet is dimly lit, a dark coating of paint will make it almost impossible to find what you’re looking for without using a flashlight.
The Finish
When it comes to the paint finish for your closet’s interior, it’s really a matter of personal preference. Many people opt to match the finish of their bedroom walls by choosing a flat or semi-gloss paint. On the other hand, something like a satin finish is better at hiding scuffs, streaks and stains. This can be ideal for a closet space where you’re regularly pulling things in and out.
Remember, at the end of the day, the best part about paint is that if you ever change your mind, you can always cover it with another coat in a different colour!

5 Ways to Wake Up Happy and be More Productive
At Organized Interiors, we are in the business of making your life easier. There is nothing worse than rushing in the morning, but this is a reality many people face everyday. If you want to get the most out of your time in the early hours of the day, there are a number of tips to consider. We would like to take a moment to remind our clients that installing new cabinets and closet organizers is more than just for function and aesthetics.
Chances are, you probably haven’t thought about how much time you waste every day. Small things like searching for an outfit or struggling to find a tie or pair of shoes can easily be avoided. Consider the fact that on average, most people spend an extra 5-10 minutes a day on these kinds of pointless tasks. While this may seem small, this equates to roughly 30-60 hours a year. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend this time sleeping or relaxing? With that in mind, here are some great ways to relieve stress and stay positive, because we all know getting a bad start is never a good thing. Feel free to thank us later!
Tips to wake up happy and be more productive
- Get organized — studies have found that people who are more organized tend to be happier than those of us who live cluttered lifestyles. It is important to note that organization is a mindset that requires a comprehensive effort. This means you should not only aim to clean up the physical space where you live, but also to keep your priorities in order. Also, it will help not to think of the two as separate and distinct; as experts in the field of interior design and organization, we have found that clean rooms can have a powerful impact motivationally on people. Making a list of your daily agenda will give you a direct plan of attack; cross errands off as you go, and you’ll likely notice a marked improvement in your overall productivity.
- Have a dedicated closet space — having a place to get dressed in the morning is a must-have to live clutter-free. We recommend keeping apparel separate with storage racks. As well, bench seating will allow you to quickly dress and change outfits.
- Get quality sleep — getting your 8 hours is very important. However, there is a stark difference between a night of tossing and turning vs. one where you can rest in comfort. Thus, buy a good bed and eliminate unnecessary distractions in your room. If you have a TV, make sure to stop watching it at least an hour before you go to sleep. This will help you unwind and get some good old fashioned shut eye.
- Let the light in — to get that extra boost you need to wake up and be alert, consider opening the blinds or curtains on your bedroom windows. Sunlight has a natural effect on the human body, so use this to your advantage.
- Play relaxing music — instead of setting an annoying alarm clock to go off (which may make you want to hit the snooze button over and over), play some classical or meditation tunes. Trust us, it will help!
